SPIRITS Final Executive Summary

After 3 years of intensive collaborative research, SPIRITS consortium is proud to provide here a short summary of all the work conducted in this Interreg project, and results obtained by all partners with help of associate partners.

SPIRITS Final Workshop

The final workshop organized by the SPIRITS consortium was planned on March 20, 2020; with presentation of the developments and results in the morning, and demos in the afternoon at IHU Strasbourg, France. Due to the Covid 19 outbreak, the workshop could not take place.

3D Printing in FHNW

Work on 3D printed metal components was the focus of M. Sc thesis of Sebastian Dany, from Hochschule Lippstadt-Hamm. He successfully defended the work he developed in FHNW on "Entwicklung eines im SLM-Verfahren gefertigten, auxetischen Aktuators aus einer Titanlegierung". Congratulations to him!

SPIRITS at IEEE IROS 2019

SPIRITS outputs will be presented at IEE IROS 2019: the development by INSA of soft actuators with calibration-based design, and also the design of instrumented needle with tip force sensing, a shared work of EPFL and INSA. IROS is one of the largest and most impacting robotics research conferences worldwide. SPIRITS is proud to be part of the event, early November 2019 in Macau, China.

Project results at ISMIT and Innovation Forum Medizintechnik

After 2.5 years, the number of results of SPIRITS is growing, and accordingly the dissemination of the project results.

In October, the work on needle driving was presented at the 31st conference of the international Society for Medical Innovation and Technology (iSMIT). SMIT conference was the perfect place to present the work on robot design for percutaneous procedures.

In October also, SPIRITS results on tactile sensing were presented with a poster and flyer distribution at the 2019 Innovation Forum Medizintechnik taking place in Tüttlingen.

Upper Rhine Health Tech Innovation Forum

The INTERREG V consortia NANOTRANSMED and SPIRITS, ECPM School and BioValley France organize the first edition of the Upper Rhine Health Tech Innovation Forum. This trinational event (France, Germany, Switzerland) will gather international players around TechMed, BioTech and Diagnostic May 15th and 16th 2019 in ECPM – Strasbourg.

SPIRITS Meeting in Muttenz

SPIRITS partners gathered on April 5, 2019 in Muttenz, Switzerland for project review. New outputs were discussed as well as the organization of the 3rd year of the project. In the afternoon, all the partners could discover the brand new FHNW Campus Muttenz, with its amazing architecture and labs.

SPIRITS at IEEE ICRA 2019

Work on the development of hydraulically-actuated 3D-printed compliant joints is accepted for presentation at IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation. ICRA brings together the world's top researchers and most important companies to share ideas and advances in our field. SPIRITS is proud to be part of the event, with a presentation of joint work between UMM and INSA.

Meet the Expert 2019 Participation

[MEET THE EXPERT] Implants is taking place for the tenth time in 2019 and is the well-known event for the implant industry in Europe. Work on 3D-printed material sterilization will be presented March 19, 2019.

SPIRITS at MEDICA 2018

SPIRITS project will be present at MEDICA 2018, the world's largest medical trade fair. 3D printed components and robotic systems as developed in the project will be exhibited. Press release here

SPIRITS Meeting in Mannheim

SPIRITS partners gathered on October 22, 2018 in Mannheim, Germany to review current progress of the project. The occasion to discuss the promising results obtained after 18 months, and to appreciate all developments achieved by UMM at Cubex41 with PAMB group of Fraunhofer IPA.

Robotics & X-Ray exposition: encouraging results presented at CIRSE 2018

Encouraging results on the use of SPIRITS robot for biopsy procedures are presented on September 25, 2018 at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe in Lisbon, Portugal. Experiments with radiologists from Strasbourg have been performed that show significant reduction of X-ray exposition during tests on phantoms.

SPIRITS Workshop: October 16, 2018 - 3D Printing, Robotics and Medicine

SPIRITS is organising with GDR Robotique one day focused on "3D Printing, Robotics and Medicine". The workshop will take place at INSA Strasbourg, on October 16, 2018. This is a free event, with required registration before September 10.

ASME IDETC 2018 paper

The work on needle driver based on multimaterial additive manufacturing will be presented at ASME IDETC 2018, during the 42th Mechanisms and Robotics conference. The conference will take place from August 26 to August 29 in Quebec City.

SPIRITS Meeting in Furtwangen

SPIRITS meeting was organised April 20th, 2018 in Furtwangen. Organised at HFU, it allowed fruitful discussions between the 5 partners, and in the afternoon a lab tour of clean room facilities and the Future Care Lab.

IEEE EMBC paper

Work on the analysis of percutaneous procedures and the desired functionalities of a robotic system for this context is now accepted to next IEEE International Engineering in Medicine and Biology Conference (IEEE EMBC).

SPIRITS discussion in Mainz

On April 10, researchers from INSA visited Mainz University to discuss with Biomatics members on their activity. A great visit and exchanges with our associate partner.

Robotics for Interventional Radiology: Oral Presentation at Surgetica 2017

A. Pfeil from INSA was selected for oral presentation at Surgetica 2017, conference focused on Computer Assisted Medical Interventions that took place in Strasbourg from Nov. 20 to 22, 2017. The presentation was focused on "A new multimodal 3D printed robotic assistant for interventional radiology", using analysis done in the context of Spirits project.

3D Printing of auxetic structures at DGBM2017

F. Schuler from FHNW presented at DGBM2017 (Jahrestagung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Biomaterialien) the current work on "Auxetic biopsy needle drive actuators made from NiTi" in november 2017.

SPIRITS Meeting in Neuchâtel

SPIRITS meeting was organised October 16th, 2017 in Neuchâtel. Organised inside Microcity where Instant-lab of EPFL is located, it allowed the partners to discuss current status of project developments and to have a lab tour of Medtech activities organised by C. Baur. In the afternoon, associate partners joined us physically and in teleconference to discuss the project as well.

SPIRITS at the Fête de la Science 2017

SPIRITS was present at the Fête de la Science 2017 in Strasbourg. This large-audience event is a great opportunity to share science and technology. We presented 3D printing applied to medical robotics, and technologies related to the SPIRITS project through interactive demonstrations!

SPIRITS Kick-Off Meeting was organised April 10th, 2017 in Strasbourg. Organised inside the Civil Hospital of Strasbourg, it allowed the partners to discuss initial actions and meet around the latest developments of INSA partner on the topic of 3D polymer printing and its use for medical robotics.
